Helpful Hints & Important Updates
SUGGESTED LANDSCAPE BUDGET
Each year we provide our associations with a Suggested Landscape Budget based on our knowledge of the property. It includes preventative care for plant material and turf, as well as a “wish list” for long term projects. The following defines some of the services we may suggest. ANNUAL FLOWER INSTALLATION Installation of annual flowers spring and fall to enhance plant beds at entrances to the association, monument signs, clubhouse or other specific location.
MULCH Mulch protects the root structure from temperature extremes, keeps weeds in check, and enhances the property, thereby increasing property value. Mulch is depleted from plant beds and tree crowns by decomposition and during routine cleanup and should be replaced every 2 to 3 years.
PLANT MATERIAL ENHANCEMENT Geared toward older properties with mature foundation plant material, plant material enhancement is a multi-year project to re-energize the landscape design of targeted buildings annually.
PLANT MATERIAL REPLACEMENT Replace dead, diseased, or overgrown plant material annually. Plant replacement is best installed in the fall annually.
REJUVENATION PRUNING Renewal or radical cutting back of shrubs to stimulate new growth, performed on old, woody shrubs with little leaf growth at the base. Rejuvenation pruning is performed when shrubs are dormant. New shoots will grow from the existing root structure, creating a new shrub.
SPLASH BLOCKS Replace missing, damaged, or cracked splash blocks annually.
TURF RENOVATION Core aeration and slit seeding are the major components of turf renovation and should be performed in conjunction with each other.
• Aeration Mechanical means of lessening soil compaction. A plug the size of a little finger is pulled from the soil and dropped on the surface of the lawn area to decompose naturally. By lessening compacted soils water, air and chemicals are more readily available to the plant. Roots expand, thicken and grow deeper. Aeration is performed annually spring or fall.
• Slit Seeding Slit seeding is performed between April 1st – May 30th and August 15th – September 30th. Seed is mechanically placed under the soil, allowing better seed/soil contact and seed protection than broadcast seeding. Seed germination is greater because there is minimal seed lost, due to wind, water, or animal erosion.
